"1963 Johnson 40-=hp model RK-25
Starts and runs real good, until I shut it off, than can not get it to re-start.
It has good spark.
The sediment bowl seems to be half full or less.
I was told this model has an automatic, fuel shut off switch.
If so, how do you reset it?
I have disconnected the live wire from the battery with no success.
There are wires going to a switch on the left side of the motor, do you know what they control?
(The fuel system is all on the right side)
Thank you!"

"With the spark plugs removed, the spark should jump a 1/4" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP! Does it? If you haven't looked under the flywheel lately, I'd suggest doing so ot inspect for cracked coils etc.

NOTE: When reinstalling the flywheel, be sure to torque the nut to 105 foot pounds, otherwise the fylwheel key will shear.

The sediment bowl being half full is normal.

There is no automatic fuel shut off switch.

Disconnecting the live wire from the battery? You'll need to explain that to me. What wire and where does it lead to?

The component on the port (left) side of the engine that has a couple wires and a vaccum hose attached to it is a cutout switch of sorts. It's purpose is to short out one set of points should you encounter a runaway engine. Without that component, you coulld close the throttle on a runaway engine and the engine rpms would still increase until the engine blew up.

Observe the carburetor as you pump the fuel primer bulb, if fuel leaks from it anywhere, remove, clean, and rebuild it.

Let us know what you find."

"Thank you Joe:
The idear of disconnecting the live wire (cable from battery to starter) was suggested to reset the cut out switch which you said was not on this unit, thanks for the imfo on that.
I installed a new key on flywheel last week because it was sheared as you said would happen and torqued it to 120 ft pounds.(that was last week)
It has a good blue spark and you can hear the snap so that would suggest the key is still intack, is that correct?
I still have to check for leaks asyou said.
Thanks again Joe"
