The idle screw is all the way in and it won't idle. !989 evinrude 48 h p s p l . Starts up just fine but won't keep running. If I push in the key to choke it reaves up then will slow down and die. Sure is a pain trying to load it on the trailer. Any ideas?? bsandy

Re: will not idle

Did you just buy the boat / motor?.----------Is this something that developed slowly over time or all of a sudden?---------Start with a compression test in your trouble shooting. These 2 cylinder motors have a history of breaking piston rings.

When you say the above, did it not idle and then you turned in the idle screw "all the way" or did you turn in the idle screw all the way and are now wondering why it won't stay running. If it is the later, turn it back out counterclockwise about 1.5 turns, try it again, if it runs, let it warm up bring it to a slow idle and start turning it back in (clockwise) 1/8 of a turn. Let the motor respond for 30 seconds or so and keep doing it. When you do it and the motor wants to die on you and sneezes, turn it back out 1/4 turn and leave it alone.

When you choke a motor it will provide for the rich starting condition and will temporarily compensate for a lean condition, but once you remove the choke your idle adjust has to be set properly or it will stall out if too lean.

Re: will not idle

I just took out the plugs and the bottom one looked new(clean) We checked it for spark and it has good spark. Then it must not be getting gas to that cly. Where do I start? bsandy

Re: will not idle

First how big a gap can the spark jump-----------------Just on a plug laying on the block is NOT a good test.----------------Your bottom carburetor needs cleaning and inspection if indeed you have " good " spark.----------The high speed jet in the bottom of the float bowl needs to come out for cleaning.----------------If you find dirt / gum in the bottom carburetor , then you need to do the top as well.

Re: will not idle

I did the test with just the plug on the block. I took the wire off the plug and it started and ran. I did a compression test, 145 on top and 140 on bottom. Ran the test with plugs out. I will take the bottom carb out and clean and rebuild. Never did one and was afraid to start but here goes.

Re: will not idle

Spark test..... The spark should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP! Anything less presents a problem.

(Spark Tester - Home Made)
(J. Reeves)

A spark tester can be made with a piece of 1x4 or 1x6, drive a few finishing nails through it, then bend the pointed ends at a right angle. You can then adjust the gap by simply twisting the nail(s). Solder a spark plug wire to one which you can connect to the spark plug boots, and a ground wire of some kind to the other to connect to the powerhead somewhere. Use small alligator clips on the other end of the wires to connect to ground and to the spark plug connector that exists inside of the rubber plug boot.
Using the above, one could easily build a spark tester whereas they could connect 2, 4, 6, or 8 cylinders all at one time. The ground nail being straight up, the others being bent, aimed at the ground nail. A typical 4 cylinder tester follows:

..........X1..........X2
.................X..(grd)
..........X3..........X4
