Will Gen1 oil bottle work with Gen2?

Hi Guys;

I am lining up all my ducks for the Alpha Gen1 to Alpha Gen2 swap later this spring.

Will the old round remote oil resevoir bottles work with the new Gen2 assemblies?

Some online info I have read says I have to replace them with the newer square bottles. Is this correct?

Thanks

You have to change the transom assembly to upgrade the drive. The newer style reservoir should be used or you can delete the whole system and not have a reservoir.

Yes, I'm replacing the whole shebang...legs and transoms....i would have thought the bottles would work the same though, but I guess not.

I like having the resevoirs ... visual indication and peace of mind knowing the legs are filled.

Are you talking about just the "oil bottle reservoir itself"? Or everything to hook the bottle up at the transom area? Or both?

If you are hooking up the whole kit, Then we may need the transom serial number to know what fitting design you have as there are two styles.

I'm just talking about the bottle only.

I have the correct barbed connection fitting (86113 Quick Connector) that attaches the bottle hose to the Gen2 inner transom plate connect.

I don't think I need need the whole kit.

Why won't the old round bottle work?

Sorry about all the questions, But I just want to be sure were on the same page before I gave out my opinion.

The bottle you have, Does it have the sensor/switch inside the bottle like the one in this first link below ?,

Or do you not have the sensor/switch and it looks more like the one in the next link ? (Part # 69622A7) On this one, the oil hose hooks up to the upper vent hole on the side of the sterndrive on outside of the boat.

You could also go fancy if you would like.

If you have the round bottle like in the first link, than I can't recall any reason why it would not work.

The main reason mercruiser went to the square bottle is so that they could mount the bottle on the engine much easier rather than mounting the round bottle on the transom area of the boat like they did in the past. Mercruiser likes to try and keep everything confined to one area as much as possible.

Now if you have the one from the mercstuff link then i'm not to sure, But to me a bottle is a bottle and it may work if you can hook it up correctly. The main thing to keep in mind is you need to make sure the little rubber oneway valve on top of the cap/lid (usually orange) is in place and working correctly.

Good luck.:)

The reason I say use the newer reservoir is because over the last few years I have seen a hand full of the old reservoirs (most already abandoned) with cracks from age. A little too brittle. You can get the newer style reservoir with a mount that goes on the two back port side intake manifold bolts on the v8 engine.

Thanks for the repliies

The original bottles are 1990 vintage, and do not have any sensor/switch function...just a bottle.

Yes, they are the bottle with the outside drive connection shown on the mercstuff website in your second link. It will be nice to get rid of the outside connection with the new Gen2 legs.

The one way valves function properly in the caps. The bottles are 20 years old, and I agree with your comment on the plastic becoming brittle, so I will have. a good look at them to be sure they are ok. I suppose for that reason alone I should replace them.

I just can't see any reason not to use the old ones if the valves function ok.

Thanks

Give the bottle a good squeeze and see if it cracks. It must be able to with stand positive internal pressure. Atleast 13 lbs.
