"I have posted here before abo

"I have posted here before about my 74 850. I think reverse is gone, shifts really hard and never fully engages. Forward is fine, all cables are adjusted properly.I was told a 80 h.p. lower unit will work on my 850. Its slightly newer, but do not know the serial number yet. Is this true, or is this person just taking me on a ride. Thanks"

"Tom, Most of the 70s and 80s

"Tom, Most of the 70s and 80s inline 4 and 6 cylinder lU will interchange. If the years are close, it will likely work fine."

"Thanks for the info. I'm

"Thanks for the info. I'm in the process of buying a 72 80hp that still runs, all it needs is the engine side plug and harness, I can still buy a aftermarket for 120 bucks. The motor has power tilt which my 850 is without. All for $150. I'm confused why mercury would make a 80 and 850, is there a difference. Do things like the distrubutor and spark control interchange also? My thanks, all the info I've gotten has be very helpful."

"Tom, Check [url]www.surplusu

"Tom, Check www.surplusunlimited.com for the wiring harness. They may have the best price.

Merc made close but different HP models in different years. These had technology differences, and also marketing reasons. For example when the '78 150HP V6 was introduced, the '77 150HP inline six merc was renamed the 140HP Merc in 1978, so as not to compete.

On these 4 and six cylinder inline motors, distributors, PTT units lower units, carbs, starters etc will all interchange. The only difference is when the ignition became ADI (distributorless). Obviously distributor and distributorless ignitions do not share many parts, maybe a coil at most."
