Will a common outboard tachometer work on my 1958 Evinrude Fastwin 18hp?

Howdy everyone. Here's where my newbie questions start. I'd like to install a Faria tachometer in my boat but I just talked to their tech guy and he doesn't know about anything that old. Said it might work if I connected the tach lead to the negative side of both coils. I'm sure there are plenty of you out there that have tackled this issue and know what will work.
Anyone have an answer to this? I'm going to have lots more questions as I go along trying to get my boat set up with the 18 for this season.

Most newer tachometers work of alternator / battery charging coil pulses.------Your 1958 motor does not have that item.
