i have a mercury 25hp on my cabin cruiser i went out on it sunday i pulled it out of the marina went about half a mile then pulled up for a lock but when i got back on my boat to go through the lock i had no forward gear on my boat but i have reverse.when i put the engine up and started it i put it in reverse and the propeller goes round but when i put it in forward gear the propeller does not go round can any one help as this is my first boat thanks stuart

IMO, the shift rod in the leg has become disconnected. It is a 2 piece unit with a connector of some type in the middle. Unless you can find something loose, or broken, under the engine cover, by the shifter, then I'm afraid you'll hafta take the leg off.

is it a matter of just taking the bottom off the leg an connecting something back up, is there anything i have to watch out for when taking the bottom of the leg off, thanks for the response stu

wont no the serial num till tomorrow as it is on the canal i think its n 1985 only had the boat 6 weeks second time out  thanks again

took cables of shiftier and in nutral and forward i can spin the impeller by hand but when i put it in reverse i can not spin it by hand i guess its the shift rod leg how do i do that can you adjust it with out splitting the leg. ive took the impeller of and it does not have a pin is fits on a spline the serial number is 5827237

The shift shaft runs alongside the driveshaft, if you have no access to it from the leg, (or any other joint to disassemble) you must remove the powerhead to fix it! I don't have any pix of your motor to go by, so I can't help you any further.

To shift those beasts, a rod moves up and down. There's an adjustment to make this work, located near the swivel. Play around with it and all will be well.
