"I must say, Mariner is to hard to deal with!
I was passed down a skiff with a 40hp mariner 4cyl i think its a 1993 year as some one has stamped 1993 on the motor mounting bracket.

the motor has been sitting up for a bit of time we put it in the warter and the high temp alarm went off. I took the foot off and changed pump impeller removed the exaust/water jacket cover and cleand water jackets and carbon out of the exaust system. and ran my borascope into the spark plug holes.

when i went to pick up the gaskets and what nots from the dealer i gave them the serial number and asked what year and model the motor was. the dealer told me it could be any thing from 1990 to 1995 and it has no model number. i asked for a merc service manual and was give a line of BS about not being able to find the part number for one..

I would like to get a service manual with a parts brake down (with part numbers) so that if i need parts i can find them.. its kinda hard to search for parts with a serial number that is different on every motor.

the motor is a mariner 40 magnum serial number 0D250480

any info anyone can give me on the motor or how to search for parts online would be a big help.

Thanks Sam"

"Samuel, sounds like the deale

"Samuel, sounds like the dealer was a little lazy - could have looked things up for you. But he was (partly) correct.

Merc's serials do not equate to a year and no, they do not have a model number on most engines less than 30 years old (or about that).

Your serial is actually a production number. So the dealer was correct about what "year" your motor "was sold as".

Your serial (production number) tells me that it came off the line in 1993. However, if it sat in some show room until 1995, then it would have been sold as a brand new 1995 Mariner. Merc did that so they would never have "last years model" sitting around that they would have to discount to sell.

So for the entire model run, which in some cases ran for 8 years, each motor was mechanically identical and the year "doesn't matter" within that run.

The factory service manual that I have for your particular motor is Merc part number 90-814676R1 (dated Dec/96). That may not be the current book, but with that number the supplier can get you any newer version.."

"So in other words hang on to

"So in other words hang on to your bill of sale, because without it you could get stiffed by 8 years in the used market. ie: selling a 1998 motor and without proof it could be a 1990 and buyers would want it for a 1990 price."

"Hi....thansk for a very interesting site.
My son just bought a secoundhand Mercury 60HP, serieal # 9436021( made in europe). Can you please help us with the following questions:
1. How old is it?
2. The steering is very hard. I've located the problem to the swivel. I guess we have to replace all bearings and gaskets?
3.When we turn on ignition nothing happens, no respons from the starter, can the solenoid be the problem?

Thanks.....Tor"

"Tor, the motor is a 1985 mode

"Tor, the motor is a 1985 model built by Merc (Belgium).

There is no bearings in the swivel, they do have "bushings" that Merc calls an "oil seal" - there is two of them, one on the top and one on the bottom of the swivel and they sell for about 10 bucks a piece.

Most times if you simply remove the swivel bracket and partially disassemble you can repack it with some high speed wheel bearing grease (same as you would use for boat trailer bearings).

Check first for a grease fitting that will allow you to repack without disassembly. I don't see one on the diagram I have of your model, but most will have one....

The solenoid could be bad. If you are sure the battery is good, you can jump the two big posts on the solenoid (just like you would a car) to see if that's your problem..."
