Why does my tach read backwards?

1998 Bayliner Capri, 1987 Force 125.......
Does this mean the positive and negative wires to the gauge are reversed?

Other gauges are working fine.

I di find the switch on the back to NOT be in the 4 cyl position, the boat used to have a 90. I switched it, no difference. I also ran the positive and ground from the controls (remember, they were hooked to the battery ). No change. Should I replace the rectifier? Can it be tested? What exactly does a rectifier do? Is it like a regulator?

Got the test procedures. Will test it after I pull it out of the water Sunday night and see what the test says.

What year and make was the 90 that was on there? The 125 force takes a special tach made for 20 pole stators. The 90 HP was the same as a 125 until 1991 rev H.

A big AAAAHHHHAAAAA! The boat is a '98 Bayliner Capri. I assume the Force that came on it was a '98. However, the 125 Force I have on it now is an '87. So you think I need to remove the tach and get another that is the 20 pole deal? Exactly what tach should I be looking for?
