Why does my 270 shift hard when I put it in gear

What RPM is your motor turning when you shift? YOu may just have it idled up to high and causing it to hit hard during shifting.

"I have a similar situation on my 280(1976) Penta outdrive. Going from idle to troll, I am now having to give it more gas to get it to engage.
One tech thinks it might be the cone going bad, another thinks I need a new gear set.
Any idea what I should expect for either of these operations?
