Why do I have the loudest outboard

A few months ago it sounded like I had a cam in it - not necessarily a bad thing if it actually did - turns out it was in need of a rebuild. At idle I was only running on 3 cylinders.

Well, after the rebuild I was really expecting it to be much quieter. Don't get me wrong, it's quieter - definitely smoother - but still seems that it's the loudest 2 stroke at the ramp. I have seen other motors w/ the same engine cover as mine (meaning they're at least the same generation motor) and I haven't found one yet that is as loud as mine (although I realise some could be crossflow - not sure if they're quieter by nature). I actually have people turn and look when I start my motor. Yes, mostly are 4 stroke owners, but back to the point, is this normal for this particular engine?

Yesterday was the icing on the cake for me - a guy rolled up in a boat that had at least a 15-20yr old Johnson V4 120hp on it and it was quiet as hell!! I was really expecting that to be louder than mine - it even smoked less! So, it just makes me wonder if something is by chance wrong? If not, I'm fine w/ it. I have great compression, etc"

Also, as for the cowling - I removed the foam, installed two layers of dynamat and then put the foam back on over the dynamat - that's how much it bothers me. For what it's worth, the dynamat did very little. A guy at work said he used that great stuff expanding foam on his, but I'm not gonna go that route - seems too extreme and too much of a PITA to get it just right b/c of minimal clearance inside.

It's not a mechanical noise - more exhaust to me. I guess it's just how it's meant to be. Maybe next time out I'll take a short video and post it on YouTube."
