Which way does this guide go it is located at the bottom of the shift shaft rod that goes on top of the L/U shifter in the pic will you see this if your looking up toward the top of the motor or will you see the other side which is flat?I think I got my shaft problem figured out there was play at the top of the linkage I tapped it down and the rods tightened up dropped L/U again need to make sure which way this goes I'm tired of removing the thing Thanks Mitch

Not exactly the same but close enough. The white piece in pic three is the same idea as yours but only the shift shaft guide on yours. The first two is the reverse cam and spacer in the lower unit.

thanks alot It's kinda hard to tell but it looks like I stick the flat side in first and the other part is what I see like it is in my pic thanks so much I'm going to run try it out in a few

My apologizes,I didn't state that very well. What you have is the shift shaft guide and it fits into the leg not the lower unit,my pic three is the bottom of the leg/mid section.
Pic one is the spacer, goes on first on the lower unit.Pic two is the reverse lock cam goes on top of the spacer on the lower unit, and pic three is as I said.Brain knows but is not transferring very well to post:D

Thats ok I got it back together and for now it works .I really think that the shaft that comes down from the shifter it is a 2 piece shaft the female splins that go onto the shift shaft are worn the guys at max rules have the part 75.00 really great guys there for old boat parts they know there stuff. When I tapped down on the shifter lever it took just enough play out to keep the spines meshed if it stops working fater-in-law will have to come off the hip one more time.I move it into forward spin flywheel CW it turns CW at prop shift into N it spins slow but if you put your foot on it it stops no clicking then reverse and it goes CCW. So thanks alot for everones input.Put the carbs back on and we will try again in water Friday

I have dealt with those guys at Max Rules, good people.I also pick up the phone to Bob Grubb, www.mercguy.com. from time to time.No wonder my phone bill is going through the roof, ever patient wife will lose patience one of these days:D.
In fwd. prop will ratchet in one direction, lock other. In neutral prop should spin both directions. In rev. prop should lock both directions.
Good luck Friday.Wish I could get on the water but with hail and temperatures dropping, not likely this side of April.
