Which VRO pump

I have a 1985 Johnson 90 HP Model J90TLCOS. I would like to replace the VRO pump. When I follow the original part number (0174563) and attempt to follow the part number, I see it states this number was replaced with 0438406. This number was replaced with 5004559 which was replaced with 5007423. There is a sticker on my old pump which is 438285. I assume this means part number 0438285. The original 3 wire pump was replaced with a newer 4 wire pump. The date of the VRO2 manual the previous owner gave me has a 9/90 date. When I called about ordering the 5007423 pump I was told that pump would not work for my application. I just want to make sure I get the right pump before I spend the dollars. Could someone please tell me which is the correct VRO pump I need to get.
Thank You,

In checking my books, the original 1985 90hp VRO part number (no warning system) was #174257 and through the years superseded up through various improvements and higher part numbers.... ending with the part number of #5007423.

I also checked the prior superseded VRO numbers through the years (with the older 3 and 4 wire warning systems) and found that they all superseded up to the final number of #5007423.

I don't know why someone would tell you it is improper.

Thank you. I thought perhaps I was missing something.
