Which oil for 2001 Merc 40hp?

Was wondering if it was OK to run Premium Plus synthetic 2-stroke oil in my 2001 Mercury 40hp oil injected motor? I've been using the non-synthetic up to this point. Thanks in advance.

You certainly won't hurt anything.

My personal view (and just my view) is -

If you pre-mix gas/oil in the tank then plain old "dino-oil" is fine. It mixes well and stays mixed well in the tank.

I use semi-synthetic in my OMC's that have Variable Rate Oilers (VRO's) - why? because it's a little (thinner) than dino-oil and I just figure it mixes a little better since the oil is introduced right at the fuel pump.

If I had an injected engine I would run synthetic (which is thinner again then semi) and just figure it would "squeeze through the injectors better".

If I had a direct injected motor I absolutely would use DFI rated synthetic oil since there is no mixing of the gas/oil until it's right in the cylinder.

But that's just me..

Makes sense to me. I'm an old pre-mix guy, so I stay away from synthetics. I'm also a cheapskate!

i have to agree with Chris on pennzoil....i have personally watched it thru a clear gas line where it didnt mix...that was years ago but that was enough for me...

Sorry about your racing friends ignorance. When they start to service outboards on a daily basis as a paid professional then they will stop laughing after they see scuffed cylinders from stuck rings from using pennywise oil. The amount of junk that crappy oil leaves behind is amazing.
