"1978 Evinrude
Serial # J0004
"1978 Evinrude
Serial # J0004862
Model # 140843C
Trying to determine the year and model of the lower unit.
The lower unit may have been replaced with a different year or model.
Using the above year, model and serial #'s calls for "2" part # 0321453 seals for the driveshaft bearing housing.
The replacement seals are much larger than the ones that were removed.
The dealer assures that they are the correct seals for that model and serial #.
My question is what the interchange ability of other years or model’s lower units which used a smaller diameter seal that can be used with this year engine so that the correct seals determined.
Also, is there any identification numbers or other means to determine the year and model of the lower unit other than the tag on the mounting bracket or the plug in the power head?"
