which kind of steering cable

Hey fellas,

I have a 17' open bow with a 165 inline 6. I need to replace the steering cable. I had the "no feed-back" steering and I didn't like it. It was just too stiff. From what I can see there is two choices: The rotary type, or the rack and pinion type. Is one better than the other, or is there a different kind I haven't seen yet?

both types mentioned come as "no-feedback" so the question should be why is my steering tight.
cable itself
helm unit
where the cable passes thru the guide tube
steering assembly at drive
frozen U jounts
corroded upper and lower hinge pins

Everything is working normal, I just don't like the no feed back. The outdrive, u-joints, guide tube are all fine. So which style is better, ie - more reliable? Are they both good. They both cost about the same. What I had was the rack and pinion - no feedback.

Teleflex Marine in Limerick Pa. ask for a tech.(google the 800 #) and they will help you determine what steering system would best fit your needs. I called them to figure my steering out and they were a great help. They will not sell you the parts but will give you the part #s to order. Also, you can find them in most boat parts stores online under mechanical steering systems. all the best, Tom
P.S I think marineengine.com would probably sell most Teleflex parts!
