Which gearcase do I have

I'm wanting to purchase a new prop shaft as the one on the motor now is bent. But I'm unsure what gearcase is on the motor. How do I know if I have a 40ar, 40ae, 40at, or a model different from these?? The motor is an E40TLCCS. I haven't taken anything apart from the motor yet. Thanks for the help.
 
Probably has something to do with the size of the gearbox AR-AE and AT possibly have the heavy duty gearbox used in commercial motors? AE in the model number means alaska electric start. Racer may know the difference?
 
Any machine shop can straighten that prop-shaft back to new condition for a fraction of the price you'd be putting out for a new shaft.

I looked through my OMC 1988 Evinrude 40hp parts book and found that the empty gearcase housing (392196) is the same for the 35, 40, and 50hp models. That number is listed in the 2004 price book but not in the 2010 price book... NA?

Also, in that same OMC parts book, there is only one prop-shaft listed... part #386659 . I couldn't find any reference to a 40ar, 40ae, 40at, difference..... strange!

However, part #386659 appears to still be listed as available for those that want to take out a second mortgage.

If I do a model search using just E40, there are three models that show "E40ARLCCS, E40AELCCS, and E40ATLCCS". Maybe that's what the parts diagrams are referring to. Haven't thought about using a machine shop to straighten the prop shaft. I was searching some of the auction websites and noticed some good prices and thought this might be a good place to start looking for a new shaft. With the bent prop shaft, is there other parts I should look at replacing that may be bent as well?? I've got some water getting into the gearcase so I know a straight shaft would be critical to have a proper reseal job be worth the time and money. Thanks
 
I just checked my OMC books again under "all" 1988 model numbers, including the ones you came up with and many others.... all of them use the propshaft #386659 that I listed above so you'll encounter no problem using model number E40TLCCS.

FYI.... I've had hundreds of propshafts straightened at a reliable machine shop in the Tampa Bay area. and they were absolutely perfect. I'm sure all machine shops that have been in business for a few years would do the same equality work.

Have you priced a replacement.... WHEW! You didn't say what bent the shaft but usually it's a case that the prop hit something. If so, It's unlikely that anything became damaged this side of the seals.
