Which cylinder is number 1?

Hi All.

A dumb question for my first post but which cylinder is number 1? The upper or lower? 1977 Evinrude 6hp.

Top cylinder is #1 usually the spark plug wire is marked.

Thanks for your replies. As my user name implies the motor and boat have been handed down to me from my brother. He has had an issue that it lacks power and one option which he discussed here was to change the coils which we did but it hasn't seemed to fix the problem so I just wanted to check which cylinder was number 1. The next option is to do the reed valves. For your info if you remove number 2 spark plug lead the motor stops, if you remove number 1 lead the motor keeps running.

Does it have points did you replace those and the condensers. If it doesn't check the cdi box year and model helps

Thanks again for your help.
I only replaced the ignition coils which are bolted to the motor. No I didn't remove the armature plate and I don't think this model has points. There is current to each lead as I felt it through the pliers when removing the lead from the spark plug while the motor was running.

Definitely check the cdi unit I would bet that is where your problem is going to be.

the compression was checked with a tester. I will make a spark plug tester and follow the cdi testing information then see what happens.
