" I have a 1985 yamaha 30hp, the overheat alarm sounds after running for a mile or so. I replaced the water pump and the problem persists. Can I disconnect the thermostat to see if this solves the problem before buying a new one? If so, where is the thermostat located on the outboard? Thanks. "

You can view a parts manual at the Yamaha website. The thermostat may be the problem, but some Yamahas have an anode in the water jacket in the cylinder head. This can cause a circulation problem as the anode deteriorates.
