When to Change the Water Pump Evinrude 99 1975

"I am new to boat engines and

"I am new to boat engines and have been told to keep a close eye on the water spray of my 9.9hp evinrude. I'm to shut her down immediately if the pump stops.

So in line with this I am fairly regularly looking back under my engine as I am moving to verify the spray is working. This is not easy since I am trying to keep an eye on whats in front of me at the same time.

My question is: Is there a way to know that the water pump has failed without having to keep looking back under the engine? Or is there a way to know it is about to fail, before it happens? How often do these pumps need to be changed?

If you have any doubt then change it.
This is not a big deal and then you can keep watch of where you are going.
It will last at least 5 years if taken care of. Flushed after each use in salt water if that is where it is used.

"I seen a 90 degree fittting put on the pee stream, turning your stream up so one quick glance back is all it takes to see it. Charlie's right though, if you are worried, change it. SUCKS to be sittin' in the water sayin "shoulda".

"I change mine every two to three years. I always install water pressure gauges on my boats (although I realize this is impractical for a 9.9 HP). After two to three years, you can see a drop in the water pressure at idle. That's what I use as a reminder."
