"My first post so please be easy on me. I have a 2002 90hp saltwater and I want to replace the thermostat, looking at the part blowup on mercury express what is part #12-47533-1(thermostat washer) used for. My guess is its used in warmer waters in place of the thermostat, am I right??? Being from CT I guess I won't need it."

The thermostat washer

"Brian,
The thermostat washer fits around the thermostat body and seals against the cover and head. If you do not use the washer you will not get a watertight seal.
