what's the difference between te40elenm and te40elenj? I have both engines and would like to use one for parts!! Could someone help me out

No difference between the 2 that you can see.-------------Has to do with factory production run.

On this site you can get parts list for both, suggest opening two pages and compare, just a amateur mechanic here, but a quick look it seems the ignition systems are very different, like CD/power pack, under flywheel on on "m" model, and outside on "j", charging systems different rectifier vs regulator

NO, scalhoun506, you are correct.

There are significant differences in the parts under the flywheel, and for that matter, the flywheel itself.

As always, the suffix denotes a mid-year engineering change. Can be as simple as a screw or as complex as the ignition system. The parts book will tell the story.

Yes I did notice the flywheel and the stators were different. Also notice the rectifier was missing on the "m" suffix. Thanks for the answers guys. Would it be possible to take the flywheel, stator and ignition assembly and run with it on the "j"suffix from the "m" suffix? I am trying to make one good motor!!

might work, might have to change every thing including wire harness, flwheel maybe big issue, does it fit other crank shaft, i like the "m" model design because under flywheel stator, charge coil, and trigger are separate, cheaper to repair, "j" all in one piece, expensive, but P/P under flywheel general has issues if overheated, but CDI has a conversion kit to get it outside,
hope some else responds, hope this doesn't add to confusion factor
