Saw the 2011 tldi's,am interested in the 90.Noticed it gained 20lbs. and is now 3 star. What has Tohatsu actually done to this outboard for 2011?

・
This model has been improved to lower emissions and lower fuel consumption (Fuel
consumption of MD/NSD 90 is reduced approx. 11% at 4500~5500rpm).

・
Air pressure is increased, and performance of the air compressor is improved
accordingly.

・
Piston pin is improved for increased durability.

・
Spark plug is changed to increase durability.

・
High output alternator (40 AMPS) for more charging power.

・
High output starter for easier starting in any conditions.

・
Top cowl and bottom cowl are re-designed to reduce noise and improve maintenance
access.

・
Gear ratio is optimized for smoother running and performance.

・
Optional altitude adjustment kit will be available and enables these engines to run at
higher altitudes (2000~4000m above sea level).

I notice something about Tohatsu Tldi's,how come they don't complain about injector problems or ethanol gas like on some other DFI posts or sites? Or that you can actually use some competitors oil with the blessing of Tohatsu unlike some competitors mechenics will blame diff. oil for a blown powerhead.Hmmmm

Durability is a top criterion for Tohatsu. The TLDI was developed with commercial use in mind.

As such, it is a mature, nearly bulletproof design. Yes, ethanol can be an issue, but if you follow the rules, it's not a problem. You do need DFI-rated TCW-3 oil. But, since OB manufacturers don't make oil (oil companies do), as long as you follow the DFI spec, the TLDI will actually work on a wider range of oils than some of the competition. In the US, the only way a motor company can require a specific oil is if they provide it to you. So some mechanics can blame an oil, but they can't invalidate your warranty, as long as the oil meets the appropriate specification.
