"I am a new OMC owner and I feel a bit out of water. My last boats were all Mercruisers. I looked through the forums but didn't find the answer to my questions.
I bought a 1989 Renken Classic 2500 with a 5.7 OMC engine. The boat has a few problems that require me to identify the stern drive. The red shift cable is broken and needs replacing. I looked them up and they seem to be a different part for Cobra and King Cobra drives. How can I tell the difference? I have a service manual on CD and it doesn't tell me. There is anti-fowling paint on the drive covering the name plate so that's no help.
Also how serviceable is the drive in my driveway? The manual suggests using a hoist to get it off (in one piece) but I'm thinking about taking it off in 2 pieces....should be half the weight I figure.

Also, the previous owner tells me that the cyl #8 has low compression due to a faulty intake valve. Is replacing the head a do-able job in my driveway or am going to screw things up? From reading the manual it looks like I should be able to do it as long as the manifolds come off cleanly.

Sorry to throw so many questions out there at once but I really want to get this running and in the water by August 1st.

Thanks in advance!
Bob"

"You can't take a Cobra off in 2 pieces. It weighs about 80 pounds or so. I can pull one off and on by myself no problem. I'm a bigger guy but with 2 people no problem for anyone. This site will help you ID the drive:

"89 should be a regular Cobra, see if you can find the model number on the engine itself. You should be able to do everything you need to in your driveway."

Can't take the drive off i

Can't take the drive off in 2 pieces ?
The manual suggests that I can. I don't want to take it apart if I don't have to because I only need to get at the end of the shift cable.
I'll look closer to the engine as well.
Thanks for the help

"You really don't want to

"You really don't want to try to remove the lower and upper in 2 pieces. For changing the shift cable you want the whole drive off anyway. The shift rod is attached in the lower unit but comes up through the upper to engage into the shift bellcrank, trying to separate them while attached increases the chances of damaging the shift rod, this will become very clear once the drive is off.

To tell the difference between Cobra and King Cobra drives is very easy. On the very top of the drive where the oil level screw is will be flat on a regular Cobra and will have a hump on it on a King Cobra, the regular Cobra does it's shifting in the lower and the King (Cone Clutch) does the shifting in the upper."
