Hi folks,

In the spring, I will be looking at pulling my twin 350 SBCs to replace the PDS bearings. This is on a 1985 Sun Runner 310. I figure since the outdrives are off and I am rebuilding them and replacing the U-joints and have no evidence that these bearings were ever replaced, I should do them. Since the motor rebuilds 2 years ago (previous owner), the engines are black as are the Flywheel covers.
I am thinking of buying two flywheel covers and rebuilding them over the winter so all I have to do is swap them out.

My PDS shafts are 10 tooth male coming out to the transmission yoke coupler.

The question is which bellhousing is correct for this setup. When I look in the schematics, section 2A indicates 835977 or 841967. Everyone else tells me that no , it is 835978. Since I am not at the boat, I cannot read the P/N off my Flywheel covers.

Anyone know for sure which number is correct?

Normally I would ask you if the Flywheel Covers black or charcoal gray, and whether or not they offer a grease fitting at 12:00 O'clock position! (which would indicate that they had been replaced with the C or later flywheel covers w/ single bearing PDS)

Here is a C and later single bearing PDS flywheel cover (charcoal gray in color).
This style PDS has a pilot nose and requires a crankshaft pilot bushing.
No engine removal required for bearing replacement!
(shown here for Ford engines.......... but the SBC is very similar)

However, since you say that the AFT end splines are 10 count...... these have to be the early versions with the double bearing PDS.

Friendly FYI........ these are a bellhousing in the automotive world... and are a flywheel cover in the Marine world.

The early Volvo Penta AQ series GM V-8 double bearing PDS's were course spline at the AFT end..... such as what you apparently have.
In later years, the same double bearing PDS Flywheel Cover went to fine splines at the AFT end.

All Engine Drive Coupler ends are standard Borg Warner splines.

The course and fine spline double bearing PDS can be interchanged within the aluminum Flywheel Cover itself.

These are also interchangeable with what's called the 2pc flywheel cover..... which is actually a Borg Warner F/C and Volvo Penta PDS adapter housing combination.

This rather rare PDS is threaded for a tapered roller bearing pre-load adjustment.,
This particular unit was being used whereby an extended universal shaft connected a forward located engine to an AQ series stern drive.
Your PDS will NOT be threaded.

Bottom line..... as long as the flywheel cover is correct for the GM SBC, has the grease port at 12:00 O'clock, is correct for the Double Bearing PDS, you will be able to swap PDSs if need be.
As you can see, you have a few options.

In other words...... As long as you keep the AFT end spline count the same as your universal drive shaft "female" yoke spline count, any of these fywheel covers for the GM SBC engine will work for you

Question:
Kevin, why go to all of this trouble when pulling the PDS, removing the 2 bearings, re-installing the 2 bearings, pre-filling the grease cavity, installing the new seals.... will take a first-timer about 1.5 hours each?????
That adds only 3 hours to your Engine R&R this next spring time.

In my humble opinion, you're not gaining much, and you'll be spending your time trying to track down the correct parts when you could be doing other things!

Kevin, by the way.... if you do have the red 1 pc OEM flywheel covers, with the grease fittings at 12:00 O'clock, they will use the double bearing PDS.

These bearings and seals are industry standard parts.
Any good bearing supplier will have the bearings in stock, and can bring the seals in for you.

AFT bearing = 6206 .... of which is an open bearing
FWD bearing = 6007.... of which is an open bearing
All seals are 35x62x7mm single lip, in either Timken or TCM.

FWD seal installs in the conventional direction, and should be glued or staked into position.
AFT seal installs in the Non-Conventional direction.

I think I will wait until Spring to do this and have the yard move the engines forward for me. They have a traveling boom. Do you know how far forward I will need to come to do the job? Or do I need to lift them out! ARGH!

Since you do not know if the clamping ring tap bolts will come loose easily, I would have them separate the engine from the flywheel covers, leaving the flywheel covers attached to the transom shields.

Once the interior of the flywheel covers are open and accessible........, heat can be applied to the thread insert areas... which will help these tap bolts come loose.

From that point, you can decide if you want to remove them from the shields or not.... and do the PDS work on the bench.

Much depends on the size of the engine bay.
If you have the space in front of the engines to simply slide them forward enough......., the PDS can be removed.
Otherwise, I'd just pull them out.

Pulling them will let you clean things up, make any changes, upgrade the bilge pump, float switch, etc.
Great time to replace starter motors also.
If you have the old school non-gear reduction units, you can change to the HTGR/PMGR units.
