"You need model numbers not serial numbers although on some there is just one two part number, the first part being the model number.

Best palce I know is http://www.skoterskroten.com/img/arsmodellstabell.pdf It also gives an explanation of the post 1980 numbers but there seem to be some numbers missing from one of the lists.
