"could anybody tell me what year this motor is, by the serial number 4251237 its a mercury 7.5 outboard."

"Bob, without the horsepower,

"Bob, without the horsepower, which makes a difference, I would say 1987 in general - if you post your horsepower, I can give you an "for certain" response...."

"Thanks,, Yeah, It says 25 on

"Thanks,, Yeah, It says 25 on the side,, and my mistake,, the number is 0B236856.
Thanks Again.

"Thanks for the fast responce,

"Thanks for the fast responce,, I bought this boat, a 15' gregor with motor, a side console.
I ran the motor yesterday and after I shut it down, I had a milky oily substance from the exhaust,, and around the prop at the case,, Looks to be some type of seal,, How do I check the lower gear oil?
Thanks
Bob"

"Bob, that "milky" oil

"Bob, that "milky" oil is almost certainly coming from the exhaust, not the lower unit. Burnt/unburnt oil, gas and gunk gets washed down the exhaust housing and out through the prop (thru-hub exhaust).

It is usually quite noticable when a motor is run after sitting for a bit. Particularly after a motor has been layed up, such as winter storage. The first time running you will often notice a substance that (in my eyes) looks something like chocolate milkshake.

However, since the motor is new to you, you may want check the lower unit oil - or even change it. On the side of the gearcase you will have two screws - one is the vent plug the other a fill/drain plug (I will post a diagram). You can either drain it completely and check or just let a little bit out and have a look.

Numbers 13 and 14 are the vent/drain screws.

Additionally, unless you know that the impeller has been replaced in the recent past, that is probably something you want to look at changing before too long...

"Thanks Graham, That is great

"Thanks Graham, That is great information, I checked oil level and did a compression check,, 120 on both,, Although I am not getting spark on #2.
Does this engine have points or is it electronic ignition?
I have removed #2 coil and tried an ohm check,, not getting a reading,, must be bad. I will try to find a dealer in Sacramento to purchase..
One other question,, Is the impeler something a novice can do?
I am getting water out of the hose from the head..
Thanks for all of your help.

"Bob, this has a Thunderbolt I

"Bob, this has a Thunderbolt IV ignition, fully electronic (but without a computer) - stator/trigger/switch box and coils.

You should have continuity (with some resistance) on the coil, so if you have a flat line it's bad.

The coil is common to almost all models with that ignition, so not difficult to find and should be in stock. If I'm remembering right they sell for a little over 30 bucks.

Changing an impeller is a fairly easy and straight forward bit of service. If you are going to maintain the motor yourself, grab a repair/tune-up manual (Seloc's is good). It will have step by step for most of the routine maint this motor will require..."
