What year/models will interchange for 88 j40TLCC lower unit?

I tore down my lower unit and most the gears are chewed up. Been trying to save up for replacement gears, gaskets, shims, etc. Now I'm wondering if I can find a used lower unit cheaper since we live in a popular lake area. I know I can't just buy any Johnson 40 hp lower unit. What specifics do I need to look for in a replacement? Thanks!

Both 50hp and 40hp from 84 through 88 should work.

Yes, it needs to be a 20 inch shaft as both the shaft and shift rod are part of gearcase assembly. Looking for a donor motor with a blown powerhead may be more cost effective than rebuilding one you have. When I was looking for one for my (1992 40), guys selling just lower as a part wanted 600-700bucks, guys selling blown motor, not parting out were looking for 350ish to take it all, but required patience to find.
