I just picked up a 90HP 3cyl oil injected Mariner motor. Was told it was a 1989.
Serial # OB131895 Is 1989 correct?
Thank you.

"Steven, that serial would make it a 1987 model.

However, it would not be any different than an 89 or even a 94 model for that matter.

In fact, yours is a Mercury Mariner and the 90 horse, with a couple minor changes, is still in production today meaning that virtually every component of your motor is still coming off the production line at Merc.

The 3 cylinder, 2 stroke 90 is probably Merc's most successful/popular engine - a solid performing engine that has been in production for well over 20 years with few issues..."

"hi graham, i have a mariner 15hp 2cyl engine that i need to know the year of. it is code# 684C S, serial# 055341. all help is greatly appreciated."

"Greg, that is a 1986 "C&#

"Greg, that is a 1986 "C" model Mariner built by Yamaha for Mercury.

The purely Yami built models ceased production totally in 1994, however, parts are still available from both Merc and Yamaha dealers.

If you are ever looking for an aftermarket manual (ie. Selocs) make sure you get one for "Mariners" - these are quite different from the Mercury Mariners of the same vintage..."

"Hi I have a pontoon boat which is a 1989, it has a 75 hp Mariner O/B. The serial # is 6504469 It does not have an auto oiler. Can you tell me what year it is. Thanks, Pat Kelly"

"I have a 15hp short shaft Mercury. The serial number appears to be OG113998. The operation & maintenance manual has a 1994 copyright date. Can anyone tell me what year it is? I want to convert it to a long shaft, any advice on that would also be appreciated. Thanks"

I am looking to purchase a Mar

I am looking to purchase a Mariner 30hp outboard motor for a small boat which requires a short shaft motor.
The Mariner I have seen appears in good shape and has remote controls as well as a separate oil injection unit. The information on one plate on the side of the motor is:30EO C89 S108181
On another plate it is marked Code 689 S 108181
My questions are: What year is this motor? and how can I determine if it falls into the short shaft category.
Any help in determining this would be appreciated.

"Mark, the motor is a late 86/

"Mark, the motor is a late 86/early 87 Yamaha built Mariner.

The "S" in the code indicates that it is a short shaft.

The oil injection on these was a system called "Auto-Blend". The tank was separate and run by it's own battery. The fuel line feeds to the oil tank, the system then mixes the fuel/oil and feeds it to the motor. It was great in theory but failed at an astounding rate and was responsible for frying more powerheads than any single source. If you do end up with the motor I would disconnect and throw the auto-blend so far away from the motor that it has no chance of spontaneously reconnecting while you are not looking.

Aside from that these were well made/well engineered motors, however, they are discontinued and since Merc is no longer in partnership with Yamaha parts are starting to get scarce.

If the motor is running well, the compression is good and it's cosmetically decent looking for a 20+ year old motor I would peg the value at between 500-750 bucks in the used market (dealers would probably want more, NADA probably would only place the value at a couple hundred bucks at most)...."
