what year is my Mariner 40ML twin cylinder 2 stroke? Thank You!

My mercury dealer couldn't tell me what year my motor is - he said Mariner didn't specify a year for a range of serial #'s... Maybe one of you know? Thanks. I guess it to be a 1989...

Model 40ML 6E9 L 312113

Also would like to add electric start. I assume the best way is to find a donor motor and get the parts - any one know of a motor that I could buy and take it off of please advise - also are there other models that would work for this purpose?

You may as well let your mercury dealer know this engine serial number 00312113 was manufactured on 04/01/1987. Also you may as well inform them that in the future they'll need to try and add two zeros before the serial number like i did above, Then they'll need to look at the model numbers and find the engine size they are working with such as 7040211NU. This seems to work with most (not all) engines like yours that were made from about 1979 on up.

Engine model number 7040211NU MARINER SANSHIN NA 40 ML. This engine is considered an 1988 though.;)
