"Can someone please help me? I have the service disc for Mariner Outboards, but I cannot find where it tells me to 'interpret' the numbers on the 'plate' into year and model. The Mariner plate just gives numbers without saying what they refer to. Rather a poor show, I think. I have looked up the Mariner website and found a chart, but my numbers are 'between' those listed.
My numbers are:-
Mariner 40M 6E9 S 008371 H.

"You aren't blind - the serial is simply a production number, although in the case of your model, which was built by Yamaha, there is some information encoded.

40 - horsepower
M - "manual" or rope start

6E9 - is the Yamaha model your motor is based on
in this case it equates to Yami's own model
40FM which was produced between 1981-83

S - short shaft (15" shaft)

008371 - production number - built in 1986 making
it a "C" model

H - is run suffix (no significant meaning)"

Mariner 40 HP Iden: My numbers are 40 ELO 6E9L 425739. I bought it used and would like to know what year it is and where to get a manual.

"Mark, that's another 1986 model. It's a Yamaha built, electric start, long shaft (20") version.

Personally I have a copy of "Seloc's for 1 and 2 cylinder Mariner Outboards 1977-1989" available from this site in printed or electronic format or from most Merc dealers for about 35 bucks..."
 
I just got a cc w/a 40 mariner

I just got a cc w/a 40 mariner I have the year problem i need to know a little about the 40m 6e9 S002412 any knowledge helps.
