Just bought an older 9.9. Was able to read a partial serial # as follows: P/ 4 numbers unreadable/7452A7. Any ideas. Also, is there any way to run fresh water thru from a hose; without placing the engine in a barrel? The pickup is a hole on the front of the lower unit...is there a way to stick a piece of PVC in there with a hose fitting attached?

That's not the serial, that's a partial "part number" from one of the components.

The serial (production number) is located in two places on these models.

If you are standing behind the motor (looking at the prop) there should be a sticker on the right hand side of the leg (exhaust housing), right up near the bracket that attaches to the boat. It's roughly 1" square and black - will have the serial number and location of mfg (Fond du Lac, Mississauga etc).

If the sticker is gone then you can remove the hood to find the second one. The serial is also stamped in a welsh plug (silver disk about the size of a quarter). Again, from the back of the motor it is on the right hand side back near the sparkplug end of things (but on the side) about half way up the block (it's the only silver circle on the otherwise black painted powerhead).

The number is stamped in (so may not be immediately noticable if it's dirty) over top of a big "M" which is engraved in the plug.

The serial will be alpha-numeric (ie. A1234567, B.......,) - The number has a "zero" (implied) when you are looking for parts which would list as 0A1234567 etc.

Anyhow, find that number and flash it up here and we can look up the production year for you.

There is no information encoded into the serial - it's simply a production number for the next motor off the line....
