have a 4cyl 50hp mercury with serial no 8075403 trying to find what year it is

It doesn't fall into that range of serials. Serials (production numbers) that start with "8" were built by Merc in Australia and don't follow the date codes for US builds.

My Aussie lists (suck), but that number puts in the 1979, or 80/81 model years...
