What year 40 HP Mariner Info

I have a 40 horsepower Mariner

I have a 40 horsepower Mariner. It says "Made in Japan" and 676B 404081. It also says Mariner 40BE.

I just bought a pontoon and this motor came with it. The guy said it's been out of the water for at least two years. Tonight I hooked up a battery and cranked it in neutral to check the compression. I got a reading of 122 (top) and around 120 (bottom).

Can anyone tell me how to proceed with this motor? What steps should I take next or anything to be mindful of?

"Brian, 1979 "B" model Mariner built by Yamaha with Yami parts for Merc.

Decently well built motor but not as prolific a the "C" model which followed it, so some parts are a little more scarce.

Since it's been sitting I would, at minimum, replace the spark plugs, impeller and lower unit oil.

Mix your oil and gas a little heavy like 30 or 40:1 for it's first bit of run time (let it idle for 15 or 20 minutes with the heavy mix) and a teaspoon of oil in each cylinder followed by a few rotations of the flywheel by hand wouldn't hurt either (other than making the initial start a little rough and smokey).

Once it is running you will be able to determine if the carbs need to be pulled and cleaned - you may get lucky.

If it seems to be running half decently I would run either some "Seafoam" with the gas or grab a spray can of Merc's "Power tune" and just follow the directions on either of the cans - they will clean the carbon, gunk and other cooties out of the powerhead itself quite nicely."
