"Hello. I have recenly bought a good fixeruperer 5.3 stacer, (half finished project) very cheap to suit my budget and now have the boat finished.I`m now thinking about what engine to put on the back?
The boat came with a Mariner 115 2 stroke 3 cylinder engine, not sure what age cant find the id plate or engin number. it is grey with orange bands and cd ignition written on it .

The Motor apparently ran fine 3 years ago when it was removed.

should i scrap the engine and get something a bit newer or spend some money on getting the mariner up to scratch

would a newer engine be more safe and reliable , or would survicing or even rebuilding this one be a better option?.

what would be recomended that i do to the engine if i keep it?. some one told me all new gaskets. i`d be worried that all the wireing in the engine could be too old. although it looks very clean under there.

Also are these motors found to have a good or bad reputation . Thanks any help would be appreciated"

"115? 4 or 6 cylinder.(3 c

"115? 4 or 6 cylinder.(3 cylinder is a 90.) The current 4 banger was a good unit. 6 cylinder was a headache at times, and too old to mess with."

"I would echo Bandit's com

"I would echo Bandit's comments above - should be a 4 cylinder. If so it was a very decent engine, definately worth restoring, even to the point of a rebuild.

Just take a look at the cost of a new 115/125 etc. The 115 2 stroke stayed in production until 2007 making it one of Merc's most prolific motors of the past 25 years - lot's of them out there, lot's of parts available both new and used.

It did go from a carb model to efi over the years, but otherwise basically stayed the same.

You could hang alot worse motors off the back of a 17/18 footer - almost perfectly matched to that class/size of boat..."

Ok Thanks for the info .ill ha

Ok Thanks for the info .ill have to investigate further as to what model it is . The egine has 3 carbs on it . dose the four cylinder model have 3 carbs ? thanks again. Brad

"No, 4 carbs as well - if you

"No, 4 carbs as well - if you only have 3 carbs and 3 cylinders then someone swapped a cowl on you although I wouldn't have thought it would fit (??)"

This motor has a wrap around t

This motor has a wrap around tin cover? (Sardine can) That is a 6 cylinder with 3 carbs at 115 HP. Bucket cowl is a 3 cylinder with 3 carb at 90HP. If it is a 6 cylinder that the ID tag plate was rivited onto the tilt tube (piviot point) visible from inside the boat. 3 cylinder is a decal on the outside stbd side. on the flat area of the bracket.
A 4 cylinder can only have 2 or 4 carbs at any HP.

"Yep sardine can and 3 carbs a

"Yep sardine can and 3 carbs and i found the rivet holes on the tilt tube. thanks heaps, i think ill go shoping for a newer one"

It's worth parting out tho

It's worth parting out though - alot of guys still run the "tower of power" motors - might pick up enough for a decent down payment on something else...
