What the key to impellers

"Yesterday a friend of mine and I tried to replace the water pump on my 15hp Evinrude. I’m not sure of the year but the same pumps fit 1974-1994 so hopefully someone has experience with this. We took everything off and thought we got everything back together the same way but it’s not pumping water. There was a small pin included in the kit but when we took off the old one we never found such a pin. Looking on line that may be the impeller “key”. There was no obvious place this pin went. Can anyone tell me where that pin is supposed to go? Can anyone also suggest the first place I should trouble shoot? We thought we got the splines on the impeller turned the same way as the old one. If that was reversed would it cause it not to pump water? Also, the impellor fits up in a metal casing. Should that have been lubricated with oil or is the water lubrication enough? Thanks for any help. We really need it to take our sailboat out on one last overnight adventure this weekend."

The pin fell out when you took it apart. It fell thru the slot in the plate!

"What year is your motor? What is the part number of the kit you bought?

Should be something like this.

"Monty, put the pin on the flat of the shaft. use grease to hold it in place while you drop the impeller over it. be careful, it's easy to dislodge. put some grease in the upper housing cup and drop it over the impeller. turn the shaft clockwise while pushing it down. line it up, bolt it down, and you're done."

"If you didn't conciously put the pin in place, then that is your problem. Your water pump will not operate without it and the pin definitely doesn't go in by itself."

"By the way, you should see an "obvious" place for that pin. Your impeller will have a slot opening that will just nicely fit that pin. When this pin is in that slot and fitted up against the flat of your drive shaft, it will provide the push the impeller needs to turn with the driveshaft and of course fire the needed water up into your motor."

"Thanks everyone. I did notice the slot in the impeller but no corresponding slot in the drive shaft. I didn't consider a "flat spot" the same as a slot. However, it all went together beautifully last night and we are quite excited to be sailing and camping this weekend - even if it is a tad bit cold.

Thanks again,

Monty"
