"Have a 1971 50hp mercury #3012248 4cyl. What should I look for in a tach? There is apparently some differences between new and old units, 2 stroke and 4 stroke? Model #'s I should be looking for? Thanks"

A universal auto tach will wor

A universal auto tach will work. Use the alternator output (one of the yellow wires) to signal the tach. You'll have to experiment with the number of "poles" on the tach selector switch to get it working right.

"I have a tach that says: switch setting #1 for 4 cylinder 4 cycle, #2 for 6 cylinder 4 cycle, #3 for 8 cylinder 4 cycle, and #4 for 12 pole outboard alternator. I am using the 3 prong connection at the front of my remote control and am getting nothing on either setting. Is the tach no good or just the wrong one?"

"Bill you can try it on the 12 pole setting. I don't have listings back that far for your model, so can't say for sure.

Many of the later models were 12 pole stators, but a number of the earlier ones, upto 60 horse were only 4 pole."
