Hi, I trying to figure out what year and HP a small 2 cyl merc I that picked up might be. S/N is 7163991 which is the same stamped on the alum. plug in the block (COMET), motor was made in Mississuaga, Ontario, CAN but S/N doesn;t come up anywhere, even local dealers can't find it. Also stamped on the block was M75 and then #'s 5 15 0. I have other numbers stamped into parts that I can post if anyone thinks they might help tho' I didn't get any hits when searching part dealers. The Ign. Switch box was used on 74-79 Merc 75/110 and 200's, so that sorta narrows it down.
I've been told that it's a '79 and an '81, which is fine it the parts are interchangable. So far I've figured that I need the key, rings, kill switch, maybe the ign. sw. box, impeller and lower/upper seals. Cosmetic I need the upper cowling and handle grip. And oh yeah, maybe a manual to put the sucker back together.
Thanks, Bob

Hi there Bob, Have a few questions for you due to this is a little confusing. You said (trying to figure out what year and HP a small 2 cyl merc is) than you mentioned 74-79 Merc 75/110 and 200's. I think i know what you're trying to say, just would like to confirm it.;)

About what size/H.P engine do you believe it to be?

From what i can see on the charts is, this is a 25 H.P engine or one of the highlighted numbers in your serial number is off. 7163991

Could you post a few photos with the engine cowling on & off and close up shot of the welch plug with the serial number on it? Maybe one of the guys will recognize the engine.

The welch plug may look something like these,

I think it's a 7.5, maybe 9.8 or 9.9, doubtful anything bigger. The ignition switch box has P/N 339-6222A4, when I looked that up it said that it was used on "74-79 Merc 75/110 and 200's". Other info that I have:
Carb is Tillotson stamped with 1364-4929, and there's 4 directly under the first 9. Opposite that is "MERCARB "
Pull start housing stamped with 90550
Plugs are Champions QL-77-J4
Coil/Distributor 66355
Thermostat housing 85848
Where the carb attachs to block (crank cover?) 941-7375
Piston cover (where sp. plugs go) 1019-7313
Intake cover 89012
Piston Connecting rod 808-2842 (8's could be 6's - hard to read)

I noticed under the "COMET" sticker it's stamped "Lightening"
There's no cowling (another part I'll need if this thing runs)

Pics attached, and the # on the welch plug matched that on the S/N plate match.

Thanks for all the help,
Bob

LOL, That was my brother, I didn't realize he had ever posted. I got the motor but never had time to look at it so gave it to him now he's gone on to bigger motor projects (1965 Merc that's been in the family forever) and now I do have the time. So does it matter part wise if I'm looking for parts for a '79 either 7.5 or 9.8 Merc?P1060581.JPGP1060578.JPGP1060580.JPG

Don't you love Canadian Serials (production numbers).

That was made during the 1980/81 model runs (Merc didn't distinguish between the two model years).

The Kiekhaefar (pronounced "Key-Cough-er") "Comet Lightning" powerheads were used on the 7.5/9.8 horse models of those years (and a few back into the mid/late 70's).

The carb tends to indicate it's the 9.8 horse model (but my old Tillotson records are worse than my Canadian serials) :)

Hope this helps with the mystery.

Since most of the on-line places deal with US serials you can use 5541280 as your serial for looking up parts (that would be a 1980/81 start serial for the 9.8 horse).
