What outdrive do I have? 1990 170

Hi All, I'm a new boat owner. My boat is a 1990 Larson 170 All American With a Volvo Penta AQ 131 C. The outdrive has SP/CD on it. It uses a left hand prop. I'm having vibration issues when turning, thats getting worse. I plan to rerplace the drive shaft bearing as well as the u-joints and all bellows. I need to know which outdrive I have so I can order the right parts. Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: What outdrive do I have?

You have an SP... probably an SP A, of which is in the 290 group! Some call this the small pin! This followed the original flat top cover 290.
It is noted by the SS Anchorage... or Swing Bracket that the hydraulic cylinders attach to.
This drive maintains the Reverse Latch unit also.

The next major generation would have been the C or later.
Cylinders make a direct connection to the Main Suspension Fork..... No Rev Latch.
Some mistakably refer to this as the Large Pin 290.

Re: What outdrive do I have?

Thanks Rick! I thought that was what I had based on what I have read here. Your answers to posts here is what gives me the courage to tackle this job myself. Though I may farm out the u-joints due to the whole gear mesh thing.

Re: What outdrive do I have?

I've had the same question for some time now.
It's nice to finally know what drive I have, and how it relates.

On a side note, I'm in need of a new Steering Yoke/Fork.
Does anyone know if the SP has a different part than the 290?

Thanks :)

Note that the drive in the image is using the SS anchorage, and that it retains the use of the Reverse Latch unit.
This is the 290 version using the small hinge pin.
The first SP (not the SP C or DP C) uses this anchorage aslo.

Go here, and look up your drive schematic and collar steering fork p/n.

Re: What outdrive do I have?

I have a 570??? in my boat with a douprop outdrive stainless props.
The upper outdrive says"SP CD trim"
Can this be correct?
How can I determine the 570 series?
I have many questions that I can only find more questions for!!!
Should I post a new thread?

The 570 is the engine designation.
All you actually need is your complete engine/drive model number.
Then go >here< and see if it is listed per model number.

I own the workshop manual that includes the 570........ so if you need something specific give a holler.

It gets confusing because some of the AQ series drives (DP E, for example) were produced, while the Gimbal style SX and DP S were being produced.

Re: What outdrive do I have?

Thanks for the quick reply Rick!
On the carb cover the numbers are very difficult to read.
This is as close as I can tell and is this the engine/drive model number?
570A
4100119010
868272
The boat is a 1990 malibu2300
I purchased a 1963-1991 Seloc manual and as I read it does not seem to fit in many ways.
I know it's a GM 350 engine.
Holley 4b carb.
The plug cap it suggests is .028
The "Owners manual that came with the boat Publ #7732836-7. 4 of 1989 says .035
it continues to contradict through out.
The owners manual shows a drawing of the high tension leads and clearly states the 570s &dp models as included under this diagram. As I stand in the boat looking at the engine, the Dist and cylinders are located relevant to eachother as in the drawing. The plug wires as attached to the dist however are not in the same configuration. It seems as though they are 180* out! Can this even be possible and the engine run?
I guess to back up the boat a bit here, the problem is that when cool the boat gets up to what I beleive would be full speed and seems to run ok at cruise about 25mph.
After it's warm and I throttle back to idle maybe cruise a bit at idle or slightly over, it runs very poorly when I try to get it back to cruise and more often than not might not get there. I looked at the plugs and they are fouled. Changes them to NGK YR5 and ran it again. Same problem, and the plugs are fouled again. The rotor and dist cap could be changed as they look a bit rough with some green on the contacts. This where the dilema started in trying to determine which model and confguration I have in the boat. I was looking at the distributor cap and plug wires in relation to the drawing in the manual and, well read above for that info again. So I am somewhat stuck at this point and not sure how to proceed. I purchased the manual and aniticipated being able to relate the info to my boat power train. I am not confident I can do this now.
Any suggestions?
I have only had the boat for about a month and the previous owner says it did not happen to him, it ran great!
I assume the lower leg was changed to the DP system. What else was changed I have to wonder?
Any advise would be appreciated

Herc , you have an early sp drive. From the sound of it , with the pieces you need , I may have what you need. I have a Volvo SP-A 2.15 ratio complete to transom outdrive. Serial no. 2753121955. This unit is complete with rams and all hardware.assembled. I removed it for a customer who wanted the engine and drivetrain updated to a new power package on his boat. If interested call 918 696 6243- D
