And I may be off a year or two. Since you did not provide the horsepower, I simply looked for your serial range on a production list.

The serial, which is just a production number contains no "usable" information - no horsepower, no year mfg'd - nothing and the next serial after yours could be for a totally different model of motor.

In your case, the serial range could have been "assigned" for motors built during the 2002 model year or for models that were to be released as 2003 models.

Merc can do that because from one year to the next no mechanical changes are made. In fact any motor built between 1995 and 2005, of the same horsepower/model will contain identical parts - so whether yours is a 1998 or 2004 makes zero difference in 99.9% of the cases..."
