"Can I use a name brand, regular 80 90 weight gear oil from the auto parts store, in my lower units of a 1976 25 HP Evinrude and a 1983 Johnson 60HP?

No automotive oil will foam an

No automotive oil will foam and likely blow all the seals out the lower end. Use only marine grade oil.
