What is the difference between an AQ170 A B amp C

"Can anyone tell me what the difference is between an AQ170 A, B & C?

Also, how can i identify which model is installed in my boat?

I know the AQ170 A was made between 1969-1972, the AQ170 B between 1972-1973 & the AQ170 C between 1973-1978 & many parts are interchangeable, but I haven't been able to work out what makes them different (if anything)

AQ170C: 160 HP, 1973-1978
AQ170D: 160 HP, 1978-1980
AQ170R: 200 HP, 1970-1975 (never heard of this one before)
