What is causing gas to leak from this hole?

This is a 1964 Johnson 40hp that hasn't been in the water in a few years. When it was in the water for the last time 2 years ago it wasn't running very well and today I finally had time to take it back on the water. While I was out there I realized some gas was leaking from this hole. Now I'm fairly certain that's not supposed to happen, and I have a feeling that's why it ran bad. Is this just a case of clean the carburetor? Thanks for the help.

Carburetor needs cleaning.----Perhaps a new float and float valve.

By using the "insert image " tool on the tool bar ... the one near the right hand end that looks like a picture of a tree .. to up load a picture from your computer or from a URL

I think there is a size limit but I'm not sure what. I use Windows Paint to resize pictures when necessary

However regarding you carb:

Of course gas is not supposed to leak from it .

It almost certainly overflowing because the float operated needle valve is not closing properly.
It could be due to a defective or incorrectly adjusted float but more likely the needle is worn, is sticking, is or is not seating property due to some dirt on the seat.
