What is a popit valve and how does it work

I have been reading archives on popit valves but dont quite understand how it functions any help

Basically spring pressure forc

Basically spring pressure forces the poppet closed and the engine temp is controlled by the thermostat and once the water pump pressure exceeds the poppet spring pressure the poppet blows off its seat and cold water flows through the engine
