what does the Connector Assembly hose do in merc lower end mines disconnected

got a 150 saltwater 2 stroke efi on my new to me boat. This hose has been separated, lower half inside lower end, top half sticking out above lower end on outside of engine. I assume this is a breather hose? :cool:
 
this is not the original engine and there is a pressure hose attached to the speedo but it's just coiled up so looks like they never hooked it up. It's much larger too, wonder if I could adapt it to the speedo or I would need a different gauge. I haven't had it out on the water yet, I was replacing an impeller when I found the detached hose. It was loose inside the lower end I sure don't think it was leaking sea water in the the cavity inside there, wasn't any indication of it doing so

Midrange engines, 75-125 hp have a hole in the leading edge of the lower unit several inches above the gear case housing bulge. I would expect the larger hp engines do also. Internal to the engine is a cavity that connects to a vertical port, just above and aft of the hole, with a hose barb for attaching a hose.

This is a courtesy Mercury provides to it's customers for attachment of an interconnecting hose to their speedometer mounted in the dash. If the engine is in F gear and running at any speed this barb/hose will have water exiting.....I bought a used boat last year and contrary to your connectivity the previous owner didn't have the hose connected to the speedometer but was attached at the engine...was just lying loose under the dash, why I don't know. First time out the speedometer wasn't working and I thought I had a hole in the hull as water was puddling under the dash. Was the hose shooting water when underway. Plugged it in and solved both problems.

Auto parts stores have little plastic generic hose size adapters. Get a set and adapt your hose sizes as required. If you need some interconnecting plastic tubing, Lowes, or Tractor Supply, or a marine dealer can fix you up.
 
Well-----The project boat I am working on is going to have a GPS marine speedometer.------No water involved in operation of this speedometer.-----More accurate and won't plug up with weeds / debris.
 
Technology is something else, eh? Wife's fish finder does everything except lite your smoke. Water temp, oxygen, GPS, speed, travel history, buzzers, warnings, weather, moon phase.......all for only $400 bucks. What happened to fishing a cane pole from shore?
