"I recently bought a 1987 Bayl

"I recently bought a 1987 Bayliner Capri with a GM OMC Cobra sterndrive, 5.0L, 305 HP, & model # 504APARY. The outdrive is also an OMC, model # 984542. I messed up the prop that came with the boat which was a 14 1/2 x 19 with 15 splines. I've bought 2 others that were the same size with the same number of splines from ebay and neither fit. My thrust washer was too big for the first one, and the second one won't fit all the way down the shaft onto the outdrive (I think the hub is a little further in than my old prop). I'm not sure why these props didn't work, and could use any info on what to look for when getting a new one. Also, on a few post I read that stainless props aren't good for sterndrives, is this true? I'm kinda new to this boating thing, so any help you could give me would be great. Thanks."

"props from OMC 800 series 197

"props from OMC 800 series 1979 thru 1985 will fit, also 1986 thru 1991 OMC cobra with V6 or V8 and also all 15 spline Johnson and Evinrude props for V6 outboard motors or 4 cylinder with the V6 lower gearcase. Your ebay props are probably mercruiser or newer OMC/Volvo SX props"

I can tell you exactly why they didn’t fit. I ran into the same problem. The prop I bought from a locate marine store slid on just fine, but it didn’t slide on far enough. What I discovered is that the spline length itself on the OMC cobra prop is less than 2 inches long and a longer spline length stops the prop from sliding onto the prop shaft all the way, so you have to actually measure the inside of the spline length in the prop hub and make sure it’s less than 2 inches. That is literally the difference and I only figured this out by putting my finger in it and picturing it sliding down the splines and realizing it would stop once it got to the smooth surface. Then I measured the spline length inside of old prop hub and new prop hub and educated 2 marine stores about it. They didn’t even know about this.
