"Hey Folks!

Well I did it this time. I'm a total boat newbe and I'v had my 24'er for a week and ran it in some shallow water and bumped my OMC outdrive on the bottom of the river. Everything is still normal with it. It goes fine and it turns fine. When I put it into reverse and give 'er some gas, the outdrive lifts it's self ot of the water. Needless to say, reverse is now done at idle speed.

So that's my confession of a newbe boater. So what did I break??? The boat is moored and will be floating it to a repair shop on the river. All the tech info you can give me will be so much appreciated. The more good info you guys and gals can give me, the better chance I stand at getting a fair repair deal.

I'm a new boater and I love my cruiser. I just need some more experience.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"busted tilt/trim? in forward

"busted tilt/trim? in forward, you push the outdrive against the boat. in reverse, it tries to move away from the boat, but is held back by the two hydraulic cylinders on either side of the outdrive. Looks like something is busted in that part of the system."

It's a '76 fiberform with a 302 and an OMC outdrive. Thats about all I know about it.

What is the typical damage done to an outdrive if you drag it on the bottom of a river? Thats what I did now my trim doesn't work and the outdrive does not lock into the down or vertical position. this is evident in reverse when the prop pulls the outdrive to a more horizontle position.

"It just seems like hitting your outdrive on the bottom of a river would be a common occurrence so I expect someone to say "Oh Yeah Newbe, I see that all the time, here's what you have to do." Or maybe I'm the only idiot that likes to drag his outdrive on the bottom of a river!

Thanks for your help, Folks"

"FYI...hitting the bottom is not something reserved only for Newbe's, can happen to anyone, it's part of boating and nothing to be ashamed about unless you do it several more times .

however I can't help you with the problem as that drive is too old for me but I'm sure someone like Morten will be along that can offer some good advice. You may want to edit the title and put in something "1976 OMC Pops up in reverse""

Check the retaining snap ring

Check the retaining snap ring in the intermediate housing. It is on the outside right above the tilt gear assembly.

"I have a 1975 OMC which is quite similar if not almost identical. What keeps the drive in place is a Quarter Moon Gear which is attached to a gearbox that is driven by an electric motor. No Hydraulics used. The likely item will be the gearbox. Looking from the rear of the drive forward, it is attached to the Intermediate Casing, Port Side. You will probably spot the Moon Gear first. Below is a picture that may help. It is a picture of my Outdrive before I refurbished it.
