Hello , I need help , I got a westerbeke generator 5btd , it’s starting but not stopping , when I hit the stop switch also I don’t hear any klicking , I replaced before the fuel pump . Is the solenoid while the generator is running under power so hits hold open ? Or how it is working ? I have a dealing that I screw the solenoid to far in that it’s sitting close to running position and I have an issue with the oil presure switch ?? So actually the generator shouldn’t start cause it’s safety position right now ? Thx for help

Diesel Gen
The stop solenoid is not shutting off fuel. Most likely it needs replaced because most default setting is closed and needs power to open

A diesel is not like a gas motor. Gas motors require 12V so it will supply spark to plugs to ignite the gas and run. To shut a gas motor down 12V is removed

A diesel does not use any power to run. So long as fuel is supplied the diesel will continue to run. To stop one fuel must be shut off. Your Gen solenoid is in the OFF position when not running. When power is applied to solenoid it opens allowing fuel to flow so motor can be started. The problem is when power is removed from solenoid the solenoid does not fully close off fuel, so motor continues to run

So the issue is the solenoid or something is keeping power applied to it

So as I understand , while the engine is running the solenoid is all the time under power to keep it open . When shut down the solenoid loose the power ( by pressing the stop button ) and it goes back in stop position . Is that right ?

Not necessarily
If the solenoid does not "fully" (as in will not allow any fuel to pass) the motor can continue to run.

Some of the smaller Westerbeke's use a solenoid mounted under the fuel pump....they require a 'depth' adjustment to function properly.

You can likely find the service data on Westerbeke's web site...

Yes that’s one my is , but if I hit the stop button nothing happens , I can open the inspection plate from the fuel pump where the solenoid goes into , and I don’t see any movement while I hit the stop button only movement when it’s starts .

Most diesel stop solenoids are part of the injection pump. There can be a fuel shut off near the lift pump to keep fuel from bleeding back.

I don't have your manual but can you post a pic?
