Weird starting problem (Evinrude)

Found this site while trying to figure out what's wrong with my motor. A lot of helping people here.

I'll get to the problem quickly...I have a 2 stroke 1999 30hp Evinrude tiller. In order to start the motor I have to shift it into reverse, then while holding the start button, shift it into neutral for it to crank. I shift it quickly into neutral but the other night my buddy messed with it and realized it turns over everytime if you hold the start button and shift it into neutral very slowly! Haha. When I shift it into reverse the shifter handle either goes really far backwards, or it barely moves backwards. It feels like the shifter gets blocked and can't move as far back as it should. If the shifter gets blocked while pushing it backwards, AND THEN I hold the start button and move into neutral it never starts. The shifter must move as far back as it should in order for it to have a chance at starting

If the motor is going to start every time by just putting it into reverse then neutral very slowly then that's fine with me. However I never had this problem last year, I used to be able to drop the boat in the water while in neutral and start it just like any other motor.

any help is greatly appreciated!
Thank You

There is a switch in the control box that only allows the motor to crank when handle is in the nuetral position.--------You need to check that out for your safety and others.

No you don't understand.... The motor will not start in reverse or in forward. If the motor is in neutral and I push the start button nothing happens... I have to put the motor into reverse, hold the start button, then slowly move it I to neutral, when it slowly clicks into neutral, that's when it cranks

Trust me... "racerone" understands fully what you're saying... you're not comprehending what he's saying.

The neutral safety switch within your control box is slightly out of adjustment. Open the box, loosen the retainers that secure the neutral safety switch, slide it closer to the cam that actuates it, then retighten the retainer screws.

What is happening is that as you hold the start button down and slowly move the shift lever from reverse to the neutral position, the cam is slowly pressing/rotating against the neutral safety switch plunger a little at a time and finally it reaches a point where the neutral safety switch makes contact and the starter engages.

Damn sorry guys, and especially racerone. I'll do some research to help me find the switch in the control box. All I've ever done to this motor was clean the carb.

i appreciate the help, and again sorry for sounding like an ass

Quite alright my friend and I feel sure that racerone did not take offense. It may be hard to believe but every so often we too make an ass out of ourselves.

Haha thanks buddy. I took the cover off the motor and was shifting into reverse and neutral a couple times, I found the thing that gets pushed against and when I push it higher it fires up every time. All I need to do is adjust that so when in neutral it's pushed up where it needs to be.

thanks again guys I really appreciate the help!
