Weird Noise at WOT?? - 1983 Evinrude 40HP E40RWLCTR

Hey All,

Just looking for some advice on this weird noise I've been experiencing at WOT.

Attached is a video of the noise (notice the weird change in volume/sound).

I can't for the life of me work out what the noise is but it only occurs at WOT and when I back off the throttle it goes away.

I'd describe it as a high pitch super fast ticking sound.

Any suggestions or fixes is greatly appreciated. I love this motor and want her to keep running as long as I can.

Thanks!

Unfortunately it's a pull start only model without any kit (that I know of at least) to convert it to electric start.

Is there some other way to remove the recoil starter once it's running?

Not safely...Some engines have notches in the flywheel to allow you to rope start without the starter, I just looked up your engine and it appears in the image of the flywheel that it has the notches to allow you to start it without the recoil. My advice would be to start the motor in the water and let it warm up. Shut it off and remove the recoil and start it with a cord and go run it.

Awesome, thanks so much for the advice! Do you suspect it is some part of the recoil starter vibrating? Rather fortuitously just yesterday when I was out on the boat I went to a little secluded beach and found an emergency pull start cord floating in the water! It will definitely come in handy now, and yes you're right it does have the notches in the flywheel!

Recoil starters can make all kinds of different noises. Loose parts, sticky, gummed up springs, wear, bad starting habits. Probably one of the most neglected components on an outboard. Nobody seems to care about them until it breaks... Make sure you rotate the flywheel clockwise when starting with a cord.

Thanks so much! It is an older outboard and was sitting for many years before I purchased it. I'll give it a try and report back with the outcome!

Your video on YouTube is the only video I have seen of the exact same problem I’m having. Sounds like a spun hub but I have a shear pin design. Sounds like ventilation but prop and hull look great. I’m going to try a bigger main jet tomorrow and see if it’s detonation from a lean mix as it occurs at the same throttle point no matter what, possibly as the carb switches from low speed circuit to high? What are your thoughts?
