I have a 1993 15 H.P. 2 stroke Evinrude. I run this thing all the time on the dinghy for my sailboat. About 2 weeks ago I hit a clump of seaweed and it nearly instantly overheated and I manually shut it down quickly.
Then it would not restart. I noticed I had burnt out the ground wire on the power pack and replaced it. Then the engine worked again but gradually, over a few days, started taking more and more pulls to get started.
Eventually it would not start at all.
As it stands right now I am getting spark on both plugs but it is VERY WEAK. With my DVA meter I am reading only 2 Volts on either orange wire leaving the power pack and heading to the ignition coil.
I have replaced everything electrical on the motor.
First, I replaced the power pack. Then I tested it a bunch more (yanked the starter cord).
Then I replaced all the wiring for the plugs.
Then I replaced the charge coil under the flywheel. Note, the old one was a bit melted and had black goo coming out of it. I also replaced the timing thing under their. And the ignition coil again.
When I test voltage I get nearly 200V on my DVA from the charge coil now entering the power pack. I still only get 2 Volts leavin the power pack going to the plugs.
Is it possible I killed a new power pack by testing it a bunch before I replaced the charge coil? I'm curious as to what step to take next - i.e. replace the power pack AGAIN.
Some folks that are smarter than me say that power packs either work - pass thru voltage - or they do not. Mine is, but definitely not in sufficient quantity.
Thanks for any tips!!
